CO2 avoided
How GuyWay estimates the CO2 your rides avoided, where you see it, and what the estimate does not count.
Every GuyWay car is a fully electric Tesla, with no tailpipe emissions. The app estimates the CO2 each trip avoided compared with the same trip in a petrol taxi.
Where you find it
| Place | What it shows |
|---|---|
| The trip, under Activity, and the screen after a ride | This ride: the CO2 avoided |
| Estimated CO₂ avoided on the Account tab | Your total. Tap it for Your impact |
Your impact shows your total, a level from Seed to Canopy, what it is roughly equal to (petrol not burned, phone charges, time for one tree to absorb it, an idling petrol car), your rides by class and by month, and the total for all GuyWay riders.
How the estimate is made
- The petrol taxi. A Toyota Premio, the most common taxi in Georgetown, using 8.5 litres of petrol per 100 km. Each litre burned releases 2.348 kg of CO2, and producing and shipping it adds about 19 percent. That is about 238 g of CO2 per km.
- Your GuyWay car. About 0.24 kWh per km at the charger, replaced by the fleet's own measured figure once enough kilometres are recorded. Charging uses the Guyana grid, counted at 0.45 kg of CO2 per kWh, the figure for the grid with the gas-to-energy plant. That is about 109 g per km.
- The difference is the CO2 avoided: about 129 g per km, a little over half.
The distance is what the car drove with you on board, or the booked distance when the car did not report it. Trips under 1 km are not counted. A tree is counted at 22 kg of CO2 a year. The tree figure is only a comparison; GuyWay does not plant trees for these trips.
What is not counted
Your figure leaves out the drive to pick you up, building the car or its battery, and offsets of any kind. The total for all GuyWay riders counts every kilometre the cars drive. When a figure changes, new trips use it and past trips keep the figures they were counted with.
